FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How is vehicle tax calculated?

Vehicle tax for passenger cars registered after July 2009 is based on engine displacement and CO2 emissions. Electric vehicles are exempt from vehicle tax for the first ten years after registration.

Are electric cars exempt from vehicle tax?

Yes, purely electric vehicles registered before December 31, 2030 are exempt from vehicle tax for ten years (extended by the Eighth Act amending the Motor Vehicle Tax Act, December 2025) from the date of first registration.

Why does a diesel car pay more vehicle tax than a petrol car with the same engine size?

Engine displacement is taxed at €9.50 per started 100 cc for diesel but only €2.00 for petrol, while the CO2 component is the same for both. Example with the default values (1,600 cc, 130 g/km, first registration from 2021): the CO2 component is €73 (20 g × €2.00 + 15 g × €2.20) and the displacement component €32 for petrol or €152 for diesel – a total of €105 or €225 per year. Plug-in hybrids are also taxed on displacement and CO2, but usually have a much lower CO2 value.

What is the Vehicle Tax Calculator Germany?

The motor vehicle tax calculator computes the annual vehicle tax for cars based on engine displacement and CO2 emissions. A tiered CO2 tariff has applied since 2021.

How does the Vehicle Tax Calculator Germany work?

For vehicles first registered from 2021 the tax consists of a displacement component (petrol: 2 euros/100 cc, diesel: 9.50 euros/100 cc) and a CO2 component. The CO2 portion rises in six tiers from 2 to 4 euros per g/km above 95 g/km.

Key Data and Facts

Displacement rates: petrol 2 euros/100 cc, diesel 9.50 euros/100 cc. CO2 exemption: 95 g/km. Electric vehicles: tax-free until 31 Dec 2030.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to calculate the vehicle tax step by step (first registration from 2021): 1. Calculate the engine-displacement component: petrol: displacement (per started 100 cc) x 2 EUR. Diesel: displacement (per started 100 cc) x 9.50 EUR. 2. Calculate the CO2 component: CO2 emissions in g/km minus a 95 g/km allowance. The grams above this are taxed in stages: up to 115 g/km: 2.00 EUR/g. 116-135 g/km: 2.20 EUR/g. 136-155 g/km: 2.50 EUR/g. 156-175 g/km: 2.90 EUR/g. 176-195 g/km: 3.40 EUR/g. over 195 g/km: 4.00 EUR/g. 3. Total tax = engine-displacement component + CO2 component. 4. Electric vehicles are completely tax-exempt until 31.12.2030. Example: VW Golf 1.5 TSI, petrol, 1,498 cc, CO2 emissions 131 g/km. Displacement: 15 started 100 cc x 2 EUR = 30 EUR. CO2 above the allowance: 131 - 95 = 36 g. Of this, 20 g x 2.00 EUR = 40 EUR and 16 g x 2.20 EUR = 35.20 EUR. CO2 component: 75.20 EUR. Vehicle tax: 30 + 75.20 = 105.20 EUR per year. For comparison: a diesel SUV with 1,968 cc and 160 g/km pays 338.50 EUR/year.

Calculation Example

VW Golf 1.5 TSI petrol, 1,498 cc, 131 g/km CO2. Engine size: 15 x 2 EUR = 30 EUR. CO2: 20 g x 2.00 + 16 g x 2.20 = 75.20 EUR. Vehicle tax: 105.20 EUR/year.
