FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is portfolio rebalancing?

Rebalancing means adjusting your portfolio back to its target allocation (e.g., 70% stocks, 30% bonds). Over time, different returns cause the actual allocation to drift from the target.

How often should I rebalance my portfolio?

Common approaches are calendar-based (annually or semi-annually) or threshold-based (when allocation drifts more than 5% from target). Less frequent rebalancing reduces transaction costs.

Are my entered amounts stored anywhere?

No. All calculations happen exclusively in your browser. Your inputs are never sent to our server or stored. You can safely enter sensitive financial data.

What is the Rebalancing Calculator?

The rebalancing calculator shows which buy or sell orders are needed to return your portfolio to the target allocation.

How does the Rebalancing Calculator work?

Enter your current portfolio breakdown and the target allocation. The calculator computes deviations and shows which positions need to be increased or reduced. It supports rebalancing through purchases, sales or new contributions.

Key Data and Facts

Recommended rebalancing frequency: 1-2 times per year or when deviation exceeds 5 percentage points. Consider tax on realised gains when selling.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to carry out portfolio rebalancing step by step: 1. Define your target allocation: e.g. 70 % equity ETF, 20 % bonds, 10 % overnight money. 2. Enter the current portfolio values: record the current value of each position. 3. Calculate the actual weighting: value of the position / total value x 100. 4. Check the deviations: the difference between the actual and the target weighting. Rebalancing is recommended once the deviation reaches 5 percentage points. 5. Calculate the adjustments: the calculator shows which amounts need to be reallocated. 6. Choose a method: through sales/purchases or through targeted additional purchases using new contributions (more tax-efficient). Example: portfolio of 50,000 EUR. Target: 70 % equities, 30 % bonds. Current: equities 40,000 EUR (80 %), bonds 10,000 EUR (20 %). Target: equities 35,000 EUR, bonds 15,000 EUR. Action: sell 5,000 EUR of the equity ETF and shift it into bonds. Or, at the next contribution (e.g. 2,000 EUR), invest it entirely in bonds.

Calculation Example

Portfolio EUR 50,000. Target: 70% equities / 30% bonds. Actual: 80% / 20%. Reallocation needed: EUR 5,000 from equities into bonds. Alternative: direct the next contribution specifically into bonds.
