How to calculate your BAföG entitlement step by step: 1. Determine the needs rate: studying with your own apartment: 992 EUR/month (maximum rate 2026). Studying while living with your parents: 633 EUR. Pupils living away from home: depends on the type of school. 2. Determine the parents' income: the gross income of both parents from the year before last. Taxes, social security contributions and allowances are deducted from it. 3. Apply the allowances: married parents: 2,415 EUR net/month. Single parent: 1,605 EUR. Allowance per sibling: approx. 730 EUR. 4. Calculate the parental contribution: 50 % of the income exceeding the allowance is counted as the parental contribution. 5. BAföG = needs minus parental contribution: the result is the monthly support amount. 6. Repayment: 50 % is a grant (a gift), 50 % an interest-free loan. Maximum repayment: 10,010 EUR in installments of 130 EUR/month starting 5 years after the end of support.
