Key Data and Facts

Child benefit 2026: 259 euros per child per month (uniform). Entitlement up to age 18, with training/studies up to age 25. Paid by the Family Benefits Office.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to calculate child benefit step by step: 1. Enter the number of children: count all children for whom an entitlement exists. 2. Check the eligibility requirements: children up to 18 years: automatic entitlement. Children aged 18-25: entitlement only during initial vocational training, studies, a voluntary social year (FSJ), a federal voluntary service (BFD) or while seeking a training place. Children without an age limit: in the case of a disability (occurring before the age of 25). 3. Read off the 2026 child benefit: a uniform 259 EUR per child and month, regardless of the number of children. Annually: 3,060 EUR per child. 4. Comparison check: the tax office automatically checks whether the child allowance (6,612 EUR per child for a couple) or child benefit is more favourable. For high incomes (from about 80,000 EUR taxable income for married couples) the allowance is more advantageous. 5. Payment: through the family benefits office of the Federal Employment Agency. The payment is made according to the final digit of the child benefit number. Example: a family with 3 children (5, 9 and 14 years old). Child benefit: 3 x 259 EUR = 765 EUR/month = 9,180 EUR/year. If the oldest child begins studies, the entitlement continues until the 25th birthday. With a joint taxable income of 90,000 EUR, the child allowances (3 x 6,612 = 19,836 EUR) would be more favourable than child benefit.

Calculation Example

Family with 3 children. Child benefit 2026: 3 x 259 EUR = 765 EUR/month = 9,180 EUR/year. With a taxable income of 90,000 EUR: the child tax allowances (19,836 EUR) provide about 640 EUR more than the child benefit.
