Regional specifics
- Assumption of Mary (15 August) is a statutory holiday in Bavaria only in municipalities with a predominantly Catholic population – since 2025, based on the 2022 census, in 1,708 of 2,056 municipalities. It does not apply in Nuremberg, Fürth, Erlangen, Bayreuth or Hof. In Saarland it applies statewide.
- The Augsburg Peace Festival on 8 August is a statutory holiday only within the city of Augsburg – the only German public holiday that applies to a single city.

How many public holidays does Germany have?
Germany has 9 nationwide public holidays. Every state adds between 1 and 4 extra days. Bavaria has the most: 13 in municipalities where Assumption Day is a holiday (14 in the city of Augsburg with its Peace Festival); Baden-Württemberg and Saarland have 12.
Which holidays are not nationwide in Germany?
Regional holidays include Epiphany (Jan 6), Corpus Christi, Assumption Day (Aug 15), Reformation Day (Oct 31), and All Saints' Day (Nov 1). These only apply in certain states.
Is a public holiday made up for if it falls on a weekend?
No. Germany has no statutory substitute holiday: if a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, employees with a five-day week do not get an extra day off. The calculator marks such days as "Weekend" and shows in the note how many holidays actually fall on Monday to Friday. Example Bavaria 2027: 5 of the 13 holidays fall on a weekend (1 May, Assumption Day, 3 October and both Christmas holidays), leaving 8 free working days; in 2028 only New Year's Day falls on a Saturday there.
