Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my weekly working hours?

Add up daily net working times (total − breaks). Sum the daily values. The result in decimal hours × hourly rate gives the weekly remuneration.

What is a decimal hour?

Decimal hours are used for billing. Conversion: minutes ÷ 60 = decimal fraction. 7:30 = 7.5 h. 8:45 = 8.75 h. Hourly rate × decimal hours = amount.

How many hours may I work per week?

The Working Hours Act (ArbZG) allows max. 8 hours per day, in exceptional cases 10 hours (if averaged to 8 h over 6 months). Per week: max. 48 hours regularly.

Is overtime always paid?

Not automatically. Many employment contracts specify that a certain number of overtime hours is included in the salary. Collectively or contractually agreed overtime must be paid or compensated with time off.

What is the Time Calculator?

The time calculator adds and subtracts times (hours, minutes, seconds) and computes time differences. Ideal for working hours, overtime tracking and scheduling.

How does the Time Calculator work?

Enter multiple time values (e.g. work start and end). The calculator computes total time or difference in HH:MM:SS and optionally converts to decimal hours (e.g. 7:30 = 7.5 h).

Key Data and Facts

Working hours Germany: 8 h/day, 40 h/week statutory maximum. Rest period: at least 11 hours between shifts. Mini-job: max. 556 EUR/month. Overtime premium: typically 25–50 % (per contract or collective agreement).

Step-by-Step Guide

Step-by-step: 1. Add times: 2:45 + 3:30 = 6:15. 2. Subtract times: end − start − break = net working time. E.g. 17:30 − 08:00 − 00:45 = 8:45 h. 3. Decimal conversion: 8:45 = 8.75 h. Needed for hourly pay calculations. 4. Weekly total: add all daily working times. 5. Overtime: total − target = overtime.

Calculation Example

Working time Mon–Fri: 8:15 + 7:45 + 8:30 + 8:00 + 7:30 = 40:00 h. Overtime: 40:00 − 38:00 (target) = 2:00 h. Break 45 min: 17:15 − 08:30 − 00:45 = 8:00 h net.
