What is an IBAN?

IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is a standardized international bank account format. In Germany, it consists of 22 characters: the country code DE, a 2-digit check number, the 8-digit bank code, and the 10-digit account number.

Do I need an IBAN for transfers within Germany?

Yes, since February 2016, the IBAN is mandatory for all SEPA transfers in Germany. The old format with bank code and account number is no longer accepted.

Are my entered amounts stored anywhere?

Guide

Quick Answer

The IBAN calculator generates the IBAN from a bank code and account number or validates an existing IBAN for formal correctness.

What is the IBAN Calculator?

The IBAN calculator generates the IBAN from a bank code and account number or validates an existing IBAN for formal correctness.

How does the IBAN Calculator work?

Enter the bank code and account number. The calculator adds the country code DE and the computed check digits. When validating an existing IBAN the check digits are verified using the MOD-97 procedure.

Key Data and Facts

German IBAN: 22 characters (DE + 2 check digits + 8 bank code + 10 account number). Check digit calculation per ISO 13616 (MOD 97). BIC no longer required for SEPA domestic payments.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to use the IBAN calculator step by step: 1. Generate an IBAN: enter your 8-digit bank sort code (BLZ) and your account number. The calculator pads the account number to 10 digits (with leading zeros), places the country code DE in front and calculates the 2-digit check digit. 2. Check an IBAN: enter an existing IBAN. The calculator validates the check digit using the MOD-97 procedure (ISO 13616). 3. Understand the structure of the German IBAN: DE (country code) + 2 check digits + 8-digit BLZ + 10-digit account number = 22 characters. 4. Check digit calculation: form BBAN (BLZ + account number) + DE00, convert letters into numbers (D=13, E=14), calculate MOD 97, check digit = 98 - remainder. 5. The BIC has no longer been required for domestic SEPA payments since 2016. Example: BLZ 37040044 (Commerzbank Köln), account number 532013000. IBAN: DE + check digit + 37040044 + 0532013000. Calculation: 3704004405320130001314 + 00. MOD 97: remainder = 11. Check digit: 98 - 11 = 87. IBAN: DE87 3704 0044 0532 0130 00.

Calculation Example

Bank code 37040044 (Commerzbank Köln), account number 532013000. IBAN: DE87 3704 0044 0532 0130 00. Check digits 87 calculated using the MOD-97 method.
