FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How high are PayPal fees for commercial payments in Germany?

It depends on the account and the payment route (as of 7 September 2026): business accounts pay 2.99 % + €0.39 for payments through PayPal Checkout and other commercial transactions. Payments via "Send money for goods and services" and sales through a personal account cost 2.49 % + €0.35. If the payment comes from outside the EEA, the percentage rises by 1.29 (UK) to 2.99 percentage points.

Are personal PayPal payments free?

Within the EEA, yes: personal payments via "Friends and family" in euros cost nothing. Sending abroad, for example to the UK or the USA, costs 5 % of the amount, at least €0.99 and at most €3.99. "Friends and family" is not meant for purchases – there is no PayPal buyer protection.

How can I build PayPal fees into my price as a seller?

Set the price so that the desired amount is left after the deduction: price = (target amount + fixed fee) / (1 − percentage). At 2.49 % + €0.35, €100 net needs a price of €102.91; at the merchant standard of 2.99 % + €0.39 it is €103.48. In the calculator, choose "Receive amount".

Are there cheaper alternatives to PayPal?

Between private individuals, SEPA and instant transfers in euros are free at most banks. Online shops compare PayPal with payment providers such as Stripe, which charges 1.5 % + €0.25 for standard EEA cards. For large amounts a bank transfer is usually cheapest.

Guide

What is the PayPal Fee Calculator?

The PayPal fee calculator works out the fee on a PayPal payment and shows how much reaches the recipient – or, in reverse, how much the buyer has to pay so that a target amount is left over.

How does the PayPal Fee Calculator work?

Choose "Send amount" (payment amount known) or "Receive amount" (target amount for the recipient), then the payment type – goods & services through a personal account or "Send money", merchant checkout, micropayment or friends & family – and the country of the other PayPal account (EEA, UK, USA/Canada, other countries). The calculator adds the cross-border surcharge, rounds the fee to the cent and compares all payment types for the same amount.

Key Data and Facts

PayPal fees in Germany (last updated 7 September 2026): goods & services or sales through a personal account 2.49 % + €0.35; merchant standard (PayPal Checkout, other commercial payments) 2.99 % + €0.39; micropayment (on application) 4.99 % + €0.09. Cross-border surcharge by the buyer's country: EEA 0, UK +1.29, USA/Canada +1.99, other countries +2.99 percentage points (merchant standard and micropayments: other countries +1.99). Friends & family: free within the EEA, abroad 5 % (min. €0.99, max. €3.99) paid by the sender. Paying with PayPal is free for buyers unless a currency conversion is needed.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to calculate PayPal fees step by step: 1. Identify the payment type: whoever sells something receives a commercial payment. Through a personal account or via "Send money for goods and services" it costs 2.49 % + €0.35, through the PayPal Checkout of a business account 2.99 % + €0.39. 2. Check the origin: euro payments between accounts in the EEA count as domestic. Payments from the UK add 1.29 percentage points, from the USA and Canada 1.99, from other countries 2.99 (1.99 for merchant standard and micropayments). 3. Calculate the fee: amount × percentage + fixed fee, rounded to the cent. 4. Net amount: payment amount − fee; for commercial payments the recipient bears the fee. 5. Build the fee into the price: (target amount + fixed fee) / (1 − percentage) gives the payment amount needed. 6. Check micropayments: 4.99 % + €0.09 is cheaper than 2.49 % + €0.35 up to €10.40 and cheaper than 2.99 % + €0.39 up to €15 – but once approved it applies to all commercial payments of the account. 7. Keep personal payments personal: friends & family is free within the EEA but offers no buyer protection and is not meant for purchases. Not included are currency conversions (e.g. 3 % above the base exchange rate when converting a balance) and individually negotiated merchant rates.

Calculation Example

Sale of €100 through a personal account, buyer in the EEA: 100 × 2.49 % + 0.35 = €2.84 fee, €97.16 arrives. The same amount through a merchant's PayPal Checkout: 100 × 2.99 % + 0.39 = €3.38, payout €96.62. Buyer from the USA, personal account: 100 × 4.48 % + 0.35 = €4.83. To receive exactly €100 (2.49 % + €0.35): charge (100 + 0.35) / 0.9751 = €102.91, fee €2.91. Friends & family to the UK, €50: the sender pays 5 % = €2.50 on top, the recipient gets €50.
