How do I calculate my grade point average?
Multiply each grade by its weight (credit hours or importance), sum the results, and divide by the total weight. In Germany, grades range from 1 (very good) to 6 (insufficient).
What is a weighted grade average?
A weighted average gives more importance to certain subjects. Main subjects often count double. The formula is: sum of (grade x weight) divided by sum of all weights.
When does the calculator show “Bestanden” (passed)?
The calculator treats an average of up to and including 4.0 as passed and adds the German verbal grade: up to 1.5 “sehr gut” (very good), up to 2.5 “gut” (good), up to 3.5 “befriedigend” (satisfactory), up to 4.0 “ausreichend” (sufficient), up to 5.0 “mangelhaft” (poor), above that “ungenügend” (insufficient). Example: grades 2, 3 and 5 with equal weight give 3.33 – satisfactory and passed. For moving up a year or for a qualification the average is often not enough on its own: many school and examination regulations also require a 5 or 6 to be offset by better grades.

Calculation: Weighted average = sum(grade * weight) / sum(weights). 4. Grading scale in Germany: 1 = very good, 2 = good, 3 = satisfactory, 4 = sufficient, 5 = poor, 6 = insufficient. 5.
