How do grade points work in the German Oberstufe?
In upper secondary school, the 1-6 grades are replaced by 0-15 points: 15-13 = very good, 12-10 = good, 9-7 = satisfactory, 6-4 = adequate, 3-1 = poor, 0 = very poor.
How do I convert grade points to standard grades?
Divide the grade points by 3 and subtract from 6. For example, 12 points: (17 - 12) / 3 = 1.67, approximately a grade of 1.7. Or use the formula: grade = (17 - points) / 3.
Does the conversion from points to grades apply in all German states?
Yes. The mapping from 15 points (1+) down to 0 points (6) is set uniformly nationwide in the KMK agreement on the upper secondary level (gymnasiale Oberstufe); the calculator uses this fixed table. Differences between the states concern course choices and which courses count, not the conversion itself. Note: 4 points still correspond to a 4−, but in the qualification phase courses below 5 points count as deficit courses (Unterkurse), and their number is limited.
