FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate square meters?

Multiply length times width in meters. For irregular shapes, divide the area into rectangles, triangles, or circles, calculate each separately, and add the results.

How much living space do I need per person?

The German average is about 47 square meters per person. Guidelines suggest a minimum of 13 square meters per person. Family homes typically range from 120-180 square meters.

Does the calculator show the working steps?

Yes. In addition to the final result the calculator displays the intermediate steps so you can follow the solution — ideal for school, university or homework.

Guide

Quick Answer

The square metre calculator computes the area from length and width and converts between area units.

What is the Square Meter Calculator?

The square metre calculator computes the area from length and width and converts between area units.

How does the Square Meter Calculator work?

Enter length and width. For irregular areas you can break them into sub-areas. The calculator adds the sub-areas and shows the result in sqm and other units.

Key Data and Facts

1 m squared = 10,000 cm squared = 0.0001 ha. 1 ha = 10,000 m squared. 1 are = 100 m squared. Living area per WoFlV: balconies 25-50%, areas under 1 m ceiling not counted.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to calculate square metres step by step: 1. Rectangular area: Measure the length and width in metres. m2 = length x width. 2. Irregular rooms: Divide the area into rectangles and triangles. Calculate each sub-area individually and add the results together. 3. Living space according to the WoFlV: Fully countable: rooms with a ceiling height of more than 2 m. At 50 %: rooms with a ceiling height of 1-2 m (sloping ceilings). Not countable: under 1 m ceiling height. Balconies/terraces: 25 % (as a rule). 4. Convert units: 1 m2 = 10,000 cm2. 1 ha = 10,000 m2. 1 are = 100 m2. 1 km2 = 1,000,000 m2. 5. Material calculation: Tiles/parquet: area + 5-10 % waste. Paint: about 100-150 ml/m2 per coat. Wallpaper: wall area = perimeter x room height minus windows/doors.

Calculation Example

L-shaped room: part 1: 5 x 4 = 20 m2. Part 2: 3 x 2.5 = 7.5 m2. Total area: 27.5 m2. Laminate with 8% waste: order 27.5 x 1.08 = 29.7 m2.
