FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a divorce cost in Germany?

Divorce costs depend on the combined net income and assets of both spouses. The dispute value determines court and attorney fees. A typical amicable divorce costs 2,000-5,000 euros total.

Can I save on divorce costs?

An amicable divorce with one shared attorney is the cheapest option. Legal aid (Verfahrenskostenhilfe) is available for lower incomes. Online divorce services can also reduce costs.

Which fee schedules do the calculations use?

Lawyer fees are calculated under the German Rechtsanwaltsvergütungsgesetz (RVG), court fees under the Gerichtskostengesetz (GKG). Both tables are updated regularly. Source: gesetze-im-internet.de.

Guide

Quick Answer

The divorce costs calculator computes court and attorney fees for a divorce based on the procedural value.

What is the Divorce Cost Calculator?

The divorce costs calculator computes court and attorney fees for a divorce based on the procedural value.

How does the Divorce Cost Calculator work?

Enter the net incomes of both spouses and assets. The procedural value (3 months' combined net income + pension equalisation) determines court and attorney fees under RVG and GKG. For an amicable divorce one attorney suffices.

Key Data and Facts

Procedural value: 3 months' net income + possibly 10% of assets above the allowance. Amicable divorce: approx. 1,500-3,000 euros total. Legal aid available for low income.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to calculate divorce costs step by step: 1. Add up the net income of both spouses: the decisive figures are the monthly net incomes of both partners. 2. Calculate the procedural value for the divorce: base value: 3 monthly net incomes of both spouses. Pension equalisation: an additional 10 % of the base value per pension entitlement. Assets over 30,000 EUR (allowance): 5-10 % of the amount exceeding it. 3. Determine the court costs according to the GKG: the court fee is based on the procedural value as per the fee table. A 2-fold fee applies. 4. Calculate the lawyer's fees according to the RVG: procedural fee (1.3-fold) + hearing fee (1.2-fold) + flat-rate expenses (20 EUR) + VAT. In the case of an uncontested divorce: only one lawyer is needed (the other spouse agrees). 5. Total costs: court costs + lawyer's fees (both parties). In an uncontested divorce the costs are often split in half. Example: Partner A: 2,800 EUR net, Partner B: 1,500 EUR net. Procedural value for the divorce: (2,800 + 1,500) x 3 = 12,900 EUR. Pension equalisation (2 entitlements): 12,900 x 10 % x 2 = 2,580 EUR. Total procedural value: 15,480 EUR. Court costs (2-fold): approx. 398 EUR. Lawyer's fees (1 lawyer): approx. 1,860 EUR incl. VAT. Total costs (uncontested): approx. 2,258 EUR. Contested divorce (2 lawyers + ancillary matters): approx. 5,000-10,000 EUR.

Calculation Example

Partner A: 2.800 EUR net, Partner B: 1.500 EUR net. Verfahrenswert: 15.480 EUR. Gerichtskosten: ca. 398 EUR. 1 Anwalt: ca. 1.860 EUR. Einvernehmliche Scheidung total: ca. 2.258 EUR.
