When do I retire?
The standard retirement age is rising gradually to 67 and applies in full from birth year 1964 (§ 35 SGB VI). With 45 qualifying years (pension for especially long-term insured persons) you can retire earlier without deductions: at 63 years + 2 months up to 64 years + 10 months for those born 1953–1963, and at 65 from birth year 1964 (§§ 38, 236b SGB VI). The pension is usually paid from the first day of the following month (§ 99 SGB VI).
How is age calculated legally?
Under § 187(2) BGB the day of birth counts, so a year of life is completed at the end of the day before the birthday and the new age applies from 0:00 on the birthday. Anyone born on 29 February completes a year of life in non-leap years at the end of 28 February (§ 188(2) and (3) BGB) and is one year older from 1 March – this applies nationwide, not by federal state.
At what age do I become an adult?
In Germany you become an adult when your 18th year of life is completed, i.e. on your 18th birthday. From then on all legal transactions are fully valid.
