What is the Parental Allowance Calculator?

The parental allowance calculator computes your parental allowance under the BEEG. It distinguishes basic parental allowance, ElterngeldPlus and the partnership bonus.

How does the Parental Allowance Calculator work?

Enter your net income before the birth. Basic parental allowance is 65% of net income (min. 300, max. 1,800 euros). ElterngeldPlus: max. half, but for twice the period. For part-time work the income difference is used.

Key Data and Facts

Basic parental allowance: 65-100% of net, 300-1,800 euros, up to 14 months. ElterngeldPlus: max. 50% of basic amount, up to 28 months. Income limit from Apr 2026: 175,000 euros (couples).

Step-by-Step Guide

How to calculate your parental allowance (Elterngeld) step by step: 1. Determine the assessment period: The 12 months before the birth (for employees) or the last completed calendar year (for the self-employed). Maternity protection months and months in which Elterngeld was received for an older child are excluded. 2. Determine the net income: Taxes (flat rate according to tax class) and social contributions (approx. 21 %) are deducted from the gross income. The decisive factor is the tax class at the time of the birth -- a timely switch (e.g. to class III) can increase the Elterngeld. 3. Determine the replacement rate: For net income over 1,240 EUR: 65 %. For 1,000-1,240 EUR: 66-67 %. Below 1,000 EUR: a gradual increase up to 100 % for very low incomes. 4. Calculate the Elterngeld: Basic Elterngeld = net income x replacement rate. Minimum 300 EUR, maximum 1,800 EUR. ElterngeldPlus = at most half of the basic Elterngeld, but in return up to 28 months of receipt. 5. Plan the duration of receipt: 12 months of basic Elterngeld + 2 partner months = 14 months. Or a combination with ElterngeldPlus and the partnership bonus (4 months at 24-32 hours/week). Example: Mother, tax class III, gross 3,500 EUR. Net approx. 2,480 EUR. Basic Elterngeld: 2,480 x 65 % = 1,612 EUR/month (14 months). ElterngeldPlus variant: 806 EUR/month (up to 28 months). Income limit from April 2026: 175,000 EUR of taxable income for couples.

Calculation Example

Mother, tax class III, gross 3,500 EUR, net about 2,480 EUR. Basic parental allowance: 2,480 x 65% = 1,612 EUR/month for 14 months. ElterngeldPlus: 806 EUR/month for up to 28 months. Total basic parental allowance (14 months): 22,568 EUR.
