Key Data and Facts

Sick pay: 70% of gross, max. 90% of net. Maximum amount 2026: approx. 120 euros/day. Duration: max. 78 weeks within 3 years for the same illness.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to calculate sick pay step by step: 1. Enter your gross salary: the regular gross salary before the illness. One-off payments (Christmas bonus, holiday bonus) are taken into account proportionally. 2. Enter your net salary: the last net salary serves as the upper limit. 3. Calculate the gross sick pay: 70 % of the gross salary, capped at the contribution assessment ceiling (101,400 EUR/year = 8,450 EUR/month in 2026). At most 90 % of the net salary. The lower amount applies. 4. Deduct social contributions: during receipt of sick pay, the insured person pays half of the contributions to pension, unemployment and long-term care insurance (about 12.3 % of the sick pay). Health insurance is not levied. 5. Payout amount: gross sick pay minus social contributions. 6. Start and duration: sick pay begins after 6 weeks of continued wage payment by the employer. Maximum entitlement period: 78 weeks (546 days) within 3 years for the same illness. Example: employee with 4,200 EUR gross and 2,750 EUR net. 70 % gross: 2,940 EUR. 90 % net: 2,475 EUR. The lower value applies: 2,475 EUR. Per calendar day: 2,475 / 30 = 82.50 EUR. Social deductions (about 12.3 %): 304.43 EUR. Net sick pay: 2,475 - 304 = 2,171 EUR/month.

Calculation Example

gross 4.200 EUR, net 2.750 EUR. 70 % gross: 2.940 EUR. 90 % net: 2.475 EUR (gilt). Minus SV-Beitraege (12,3 %): net-Krankengeld ca. 2.171 EUR/month.
