Key Data and Facts

Transitional allowance: 68% of net (75% with children). Paid by the pension or accident insurance. Requirement: participation in a rehabilitation programme.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to calculate the transitional allowance (Uebergangsgeld) step by step: 1. Determine the last net pay: the net salary from the last calendar month before the rehabilitation measure begins. 2. Check the calculation basis: the net income is decisive, capped at the contribution assessment ceiling of the pension insurance. 3. Calculate the transitional allowance: without a child: 68 % of the last net pay. With at least 1 child (or a spouse in need of care): 75 % of the net pay. 4. Duration of payment: for the entire duration of the medical or vocational rehabilitation measure. For medical rehab: typically 3-6 weeks. For vocational rehab (retraining): up to 2 years. 5. Cost bearer: Deutsche Rentenversicherung (DRV) or the statutory accident insurance. 6. Social insurance: while receiving the transitional allowance, there is mandatory insurance in health insurance (KV), long-term care insurance (PV) and unemployment insurance (AV). The rehabilitation provider bears the contributions.

Calculation Example

Last net income 2,400 EUR, 1 child. Transitional allowance (75 %): 2,400 x 0.75 = 1,800 EUR/month. Without a child (68 %): 2,400 x 0.68 = 1,632 EUR/month.
