FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How are sunrise and sunset times determined?

Sunrise and sunset times depend on your geographic location (latitude and longitude), the date, and your time zone. They change daily due to the Earth's axial tilt and orbital position.

What is the shortest and longest day in Germany?

The shortest day (winter solstice) is around December 21 with about 7.5-8.5 hours of daylight. The longest day (summer solstice) is around June 21 with about 16-17 hours, depending on latitude.

Are leap years and holidays taken into account?

Yes — the calculator automatically considers leap years, German public holidays and varying month lengths. For working-day calculations weekends are correctly excluded.

What is the Sunrise Calculator?

The sunrise calculator computes the daily times for sunrise, sunset and twilight for any location in Germany.

Key Data and Facts

Sunrise varies in Germany: approx. 5:00-8:30 depending on season and location. Longest day (21 June): approx. 16-17 h. Shortest day (21 December): approx. 7-8 h.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to use the sunrise calculator step by step: 1. Enter the location -- city, postal code or coordinates. The calculator determines the longitude and latitude. 2. Choose the date -- by default today's date. 3. Read the result: sunrise, sunset, length of day and twilight times. 4. Types of twilight: civil twilight (sun up to 6 degrees below the horizon) -- still enough light to read. Nautical twilight (up to 12 degrees) -- the horizon is still visible. Astronomical twilight (up to 18 degrees) -- complete darkness afterwards. 5. Seasons in Germany: on 21 June (summer solstice) the day is longest with about 16-17 hours of daylight. On 21 December (winter solstice) only about 7-8 hours. 6. Location differences: in the north (Flensburg) the differences are greater than in the south (Munich). Tip: for photographers the golden hour (shortly after sunrise or before sunset) is especially attractive.
