What is the Overtime Calculator?

The overtime calculator computes the remuneration for overtime hours worked, optionally with overtime surcharges.

How does the Overtime Calculator work?

Enter your hourly rate, the number of overtime hours and any surcharge rate. The calculator determines the gross overtime pay. Tax-free surcharges (night, Sunday and public holiday) are shown separately.

Key Data and Facts

Tax-free surcharges: night work 25%, Sunday work 50%, public holiday work 125%. Overtime is subject to normal wage tax and social security contributions.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to calculate overtime pay step by step: 1. Determine the hourly wage: monthly gross / monthly working hours. At 3,600 EUR gross and 40 h/week: 3,600 / 173.3 = 20.78 EUR. 2. Enter the number of overtime hours: only hours beyond the contractually agreed working time. 3. Check the surcharge rate: overtime surcharge according to the collective or employment agreement (often 25%). Night work (11 p.m.-6 a.m.): 25% tax-free. Sunday work: 50% tax-free. Public holiday work: 125% tax-free (Christmas/1 May: 150%). 4. Calculate the pay: overtime wage = hourly wage x (1 + surcharge). Total pay = overtime wage x number of hours. 5. Tax treatment: regular overtime is fully subject to tax and social security contributions. Only the legally defined surcharges for night, Sunday and public holiday work are tax-free.

Calculation Example

Hourly wage 20.78 EUR, 15 overtime hours without bonus: 15 x 20.78 = 311.70 EUR gross. With a 25% bonus: 15 x 25.98 = 389.63 EUR gross.
